Because I’ll be the OH&S Rep for the school and because Steven wants to do CRT work independently, we both needed to update our First Aid and CPR training plus, we needed to do the First Aid training for Australia which has two additional categories that include snake and spider bites along with tropical and sea creature stings. After a full-on week, I came home Thursday afternoon. Our rule at home is that we don’t talk about school, and a healthy distraction has been playing Settlers of Catan with anyone who will play with us, including the cousins that decide to come stay for the week. I then commuted home and back to school each day with Dee and Luke. It was overwhelming but reassuring all at once as I have great staff to work with who are gracious and give their time to explain things so readily and with such patience. My first week, I arrived on the train Monday afternoon and worked through the week. I’d like to say that Steven and I have developed a new routine, but really, every week has been a little different. March has also marked four weeks of work at the school, and time certainly flies when you’re saying “I have no idea” multiple times a day, learning a new position and a different country’s acronyms and governing bodies, and commuting to and from the country during the week. It’s still warm, but the evenings are starting to get cooler and the sun is coming up later and later. I just can’t get used to the calendar being different. March 1st marked the first day of Autumn here in Australia, and this weekend is Labour Day weekend with Monday off. He us with their smoked nuts & bleu cheese which were both irresistible when it came to making purchases. Bob, the hand-stained winemaker, sat with us and chatted about wine, America, the housing market, and the two spoiled donkeys on the property, Freckles & Poppy. Our final stop was recommended multiple times through our journey: Yileena Park. We forged on to Balgownie Estate who has a vineyard in the Yarra Valley as well as Bendigo. But my Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream made the stop worth it.
After a failed attempt at lunch which would have been nice, we ended up at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery for sandwiches and a pizza which was a bit chaotic.
Leo gave us the VIP treatment, bringing the tasting outside so we could lounge. We then made our way to Mandala as I used to serve the sparkling at The Firehouse. We started at De Bortoli for a wine tasting along with a cheese board, complete with a goat cheese for the sparking and light whites, a brie for the chardonnay and sav blanc, a cheddar for the bold reds, and a bleu cheese for the dessert wines.
Our excellent and expert designated driver, Steven, was too kind in carting us around through the Yarra Valley wineries. Monday took us on a Yarra Valley wine tour. Sunday consisted of running some errands and lounging around, enjoying a day of rest while it sunk in that all four of us were on holidays.
